This year Danny Saadany celebrates a decade as a Papa John's franchisee. In that time he has seen the franchise company grow and develop and has learned many lessons along the way. Danny said: "Prior to joining Papa John's I ran my own chauffer company. However, I was looking for the type of business which would grow through investment. I was interested in the food industry and believed pizza would become popular in the UK. At the end of 2002 I looked at the pizza franchises that were available and although Papa John's was pretty new to the scene in the UK, the concept of only using the best and freshest ingredients to create a superior taste and product stood out as a recipe for success. I also liked the fact that the founder of Papa John's, John Schnatter, was – and still is to this day – active in the business. "Within two years, the profit from the Caterham outlet allowed me to buy the Tunbridge Wells store and, in turn, the profit from both will allow me to open a third Papa John's in a shopping mall, also in Tunbridge Wells, early this year." Around 200 pizzas per week are served up between the two outlets and Danny employes about 14 staff in each one. Danny said: "Running a Papa John's franchise is hard work. It is not an investment opportunity you can simply sit and watch. From an operational perspective you need to be involved, coming up with promotions and being proactive in the marketing effort. While the store managers run the day-to-day, hands on activity, I oversee this. I work from home a lot but I can monitor the stores via a team viewer and CCTV to ensure the staff are all OK and, if they are very busy, even take orders remotely."
