Shiatsu is an ancient holistic and complete medical system which has evolved over 3000 years in Japan and China. The actual treatment approach and philosophy is similar to acupuncture combining the same principles and theories. Shiatsu is often described as Japanese Physiotherapy. The experience is also deeply relaxing. 'Shi' means finger and 'atsu' means pressure. The treatment involves the use of pressure points (as used in acupuncture), using thumbs, fingers, palms and elbows to recognise a state of imbalance in the body, where there is an excess and where the energy is deficient. These meridians carry vital energy to all organs in the body. For many reasons these meridians become blocked, causing the energy to stop flowing freely, this then produces a symptom. Shiatsu unblocks the meridians to re-balance and re-harmonise the body's energy to its original, natural state of well-being. Shiatsu is actively used to help relieve many common conditions including chronic back/neck pain, neck stiffness/ whiplash injuries, muscular problems, postural disorders, joint pain and arthritis, headaches and migraines, sports injuries, asthma symptoms, stress/depression/emotional issues, digestive problems, menstrual/premenstrual/ menopausal problems and circulatory problems. Unlike most other forms of bodywork, in Shiatsu the receiver remains fully clothed for the treatment and no oil is used. If you have an ongoing complaint this could be the safe alternative you have been looking for. Teresa Nightingale is a Shiatsu Practitioner she trained at the Sussex School of Shiatsu. She will be available for treatments on Tuesday mornings at Caterham Osteopath Clinic, 20 Westway, Caterham-on-the-Hill. Tel 01883 331006. Mobile no. 07890 114491. |
