In many towns the small, independent traders have been steadily pushed out by the big boys - the well-known chains whose strength lies in their numbers. Consequently, one high street starts to look pretty much like another and towns start to lose their uniqueness. In Whyteleafe however, the independent businesses still prevail, thanks to the continuing support of their customers and the quality of service they provide. The diversity of shops and restaurants and ease of parking makes Whyteleafe a very worthwhile and interesting place to explore. The new Whyteleafe Business Association (WBA) was formed recently to give the independent traders a united voice. The first General Meeting took place on 26th July, hosted by Tom Dempsey, landlord of the Whyteleafe Tavern. Speakers at the meeting included Stephen Weigel, the Chief Executive of Tandridge District Council and Whyteleafe Parish Councillor Sakina Bradbury, who inspired the formation of the WBA. (Whyteleafe Parish Council is currently looking for a new Parish Clerk, see ad below.) WBA Chairman, Derek Vivian, said: "About 25 people attended the meeting who had the opportunity to network with other business owners over a glass of wine and a bite to eat. The association gives us one voice for issues that affect businesses in the area, especially in connection with the council. We would like more people to join, especially those who are self-employed." Andrew Browne, Chairman of the Caterham Business Partnership spoke to the group about the benefits of traders pulling together and explained how the Caterham group runs its affairs. Also present was PCSO Rupert Kelly, providing a link between the Association and the police. Derek said: "We have lots of ideas for Whyteleafe, like getting some decent Christmas lights, for example. We are also very impressed with Caterham's 'Shabby to Smart' project to smarten up the town. We will be doing anything we need to do to benefit businesses - we will be 'enablers'." Membership of the Association is free. Meetings will be held three or four times a year and members will receive a quarterly newsletter.
