On Sunday 16th September Caterham School pupils, parents and staff enjoyed an evening of songs and music from the worlds of opera and ballet interwoven around Shakespeare's soliloquies and sonnets which took the audience on a journey into "An Undiscovered Country".
Chukwudi Iwuji and Sarah Gabriel, both former students of Caterham School, returned to give their first performance together, bringing their shared love of the 'poet-lyricist', Shakespeare, and the music that has been inspired by his words. They were accompanied by Iain Farrington at the piano, whose stunning arrangements have been played at the BBC Proms and by some of the world's finest orchestras.
After leaving Caterham School Sarah Gabriel and Chuk Iwuji have gone on to enjoy considerable success in the world of music and theatre. Sarah recently appeared as Eliza Doolittle in Robert Carsen's triumphant new production of My Fair Lady at the Theatre du Chatelet, Paris, opposite Alex Jennings. Chuk has worked extensively with the RSC and his recent stage work includes 'Richard III' directed by Sam Mendes at The Old Vic.
Miss Lisa McMullin, Head of Drama & Theatre Studies, said: “It was an exquisite collection of songs, music and readings and the whole audience felt that they were part of something special.”
