Croydon High is celebrating a truly outstanding set of results achieved by their GCSE class of 2017. Almost three quarters of all exam grades awarded were A*- A making this the most successful GCSE cohort in the history of the highly respected Selsdon school. Headmistress Emma Pattison said, “We are absolutely delighted to be able to celebrate these stellar results with a group of such aspirational and inspirational young women. Their teachers could not be more proud of the hard work, dedication and focus that these grades represent, and I would particularly like to acknowledge and thank the staff here for their dedication and tireless support. And, of course, to the parents, for the care and encouragement they have provided throughout. These girls have certainly thrown the doors wide open when it comes to making choices for their futures.” It has been widely reported that in the absence of AS level grades, top universities will be relying much more heavily on GCSE indicators when it comes to making offers. So with 40% of Croydon High girls awarded a remarkable 7 A* (or more) grades, these results also provide the girls with a springboard to go on to the very best universities in the world. With a 100% pass rate, an impressive 91% of grades at A*- B and almost half of all grades awarded being A* the message is clear; this is a high achieving cohort at a high performing school. With so many girls achieving excellent grades, it is impossible to credit them all individually, but special mention must made of Sharada Patel for her incredible 11 A*grades and Rebecca Willans, Anika Patel and Sienna Cornish who all achieved 10 A* and an A grade. Congratulations to you all, girls. Individual departments were celebrating too, with Drama, Art, Music and Latin all returning 100% A*- A grades. When analysing results, there is often the suggestion that boys outperform girls in science. With 72% of candidates awarded A* for Chemistry (89% A*- A), Croydon High girls certainly refute this claim. Good news in the arts subjects too, with 83% of English Literature students, for example, awarded A*- A grades (59% at A*) It was certainly a case of “Bravo, fantástico and wunderbar” for the Modern Foreign Language students as 66% of all grades awarded in French, German and Spanish were A*. As always, on results day, there are the stories behind the results and Sue Beck, Head of Key Stage 4, is very proud of the fact that so many of the girls have achieved outstanding results whilst performing at the highest levels outside the academic curriculum. A* GRADES FOR SPORTS STARS Twins, Freya and Flora McEwan, are to be congratulated on a string of impressive results, including A* for both of them in PE. Those particular grades would not have come as too much of a surprise, as both girls are hugely talented sportswomen. Flora was recently invited to attend the England Hockey Performance Centre and selected to train with the Surrey U18 Hockey and Tennis squads. Freya, who achieved a hugely impressive 8A* and an A grade academically, is also involved in county level hockey and both girls excel in netball and tennis and are inspirational role models for the potential Croydon High sports stars of the future. |
