A brand new community art garden is coming to Caterham and you can be part of it! This new garden is a chance for the community to work together to create a beautiful inspirational community space, for use of residents of Caterham and the surrounding area. Working with professional community artist, Ruth Wheeler, participants have the opportunity not only to develop the garden but also to create some inspirational art pieces to further enhance the beauty of the space within. Residents of Caterham and the surrounding areas are invited to go along to the launch meeting, on Monday 21st July, from 2-5pm. The meeting will start in the Queens Park Pavilion, Queens Park Road, Caterham CR3 5RB and then move into the garden, to start working on the space. It’s a chance for people to meet the project’s garden designer Anita Smith too and have some input into how the garden space will be designed and see how they can get involved! The Caterham Community Art Garden is a partnership between Tandridge Trust, Tandridge District Council and Arts Partnership Surrey, with funding from Surrey County Council Adult Social Care team, to promote independence and wellbeing of older people in the District, as part of a County wide initiative over the next four years. Tandridge Trust will work with other community partners in order to deliver the project successfully and create a sustainable, creative, community space for use now and into the future. The whole community is invited to be involved in the art garden and the project team hope to create a new community gathering place for all generations, resulting in greater community cohesion and new friendships. Older people will develop social networks with people of all ages which will increase confidence and self-esteem, improve health and well-being and also reduce fear of crime. Gardening, design and creative skills, which are either gained, or refreshed by older adults, will result in feelings of accomplishment, and will build the capacity of communities to deliver further projects. No experience is necessary, only enthusiasm, although the project partners do hope to attract some keen gardeners too, who can share their knowledge with the rest of the community!
