What have Caterham’s best gardeners made of this year’s bizarre weather? You may find out at the Caterham & District Horticultural Society summer show. It takes place on Saturday 8 July at Hillcroft School, Chaldon Rd, Caterham CR3 5PG. The show will open to the public from 2pm following the school’s own fair, with presentation of cups at 4.30pm. The entrance fee is only 50 pence or free for children and adults that enter more than six classes. For the first time in over a century of the Society’s shows, a sponsored plaque from the National Vegetable Society will be awarded for pods of peas. Caterham on the Hill Parish Council is sponsoring a category in the show. One lucky exhibitor will win £12 for their hanging basket. There are also second and third prizes. A parish council representative will present the prize at 4.30pm on the day. Society Chairman, Debbie Fox, said: "We had bizarre weather in June: from cool and wet to a heatwave. Caterham’s gardeners have been tested to the max. I have every confidence that they will defy the heatwave and deliver the usual stunning show."
