Since it started in the early 1980s the U3A (University of the Third Age) has been bringing people together to share their interests and experiences outside of the more formal learning environments offered by local authorities. The idea has been hugely successful with groups starting up all over the UK for retired or parttime workers. The branches are run entirely by members on a voluntary basis and the Caterham and District U3A (C&D U3A) has members and activities in Caterham, Warlingham, Coulsdon and Kenley. Helen Moulsley of C&D U3A said: "Our group has grown slowly and steadily and anyone who wants to set up a class or group can do so. The participants decide on the shape of the class or activity with no curriculum to adhere to or targets to meet." The group also organises outings and social activities. This month, their two art groups are exhibiting some of their work at Caterham Valley Library in Stafford Road from the end of January until the 5th February and in Caterham-on-the-Hill Library in Westway from 8th-19th February. On the 28th February, the C&D U3A is hosting an illustrated talk entitled: 'The Dollar Princesses Save the Stately Homes of England' at the United Reformed Church, in Harestone Hill, Caterham Valley. The lecture is being given by Nigel Guest, who has recently founded the Chartwell branch of The Churchill Centre. Nigel will be taking questions and joining the group for tea afterwards. Non-members are welcome and entrance is £1. For more information visit www.caterhamu3a.org.uk or call Ron Giddens on 01883 346760. |
