The Warlingham Flute Band at last year's Warlingham Fair parade. This year’s Warlingham Fair on Saturday 21st June, will feature Historia Normannis, a 12th century re-enactment group, focusing on the events between the reign of Henry I and King John. Historia Normannis brings history to life in exciting and historically accurate armed clashes, an encampment, period justice and everyday life. The fair, as always, will take place Blanchman's Farm Local Nature Reserve, Limpsfield Road, Warlingham, opposite Bond Road. The official opening will be at 11am and the fair will close at 4pm. Other arena acts will comprise old favourites such as the tug-o’-war tournament and maypole dancing, popular returners such as dog It’s a Knockout, Wellie Wanging and Warlingham Dance Studios, plus new events such as children’s races and an appearance by Warlingham’s own swinger John Lazenby. The fun starts with the Fair’s biggest ever parade around The Green at 10.45am to lead the crowds to the field for the 11am opening. On the stalls side there is something for all the family, from Celebrity Reptiles, where children can handle reptiles and other small animals, and funfair rides to a craft marquee and a beer tent for adults. There will also be a hog roast and a barbecue, with plenty of places to sit and watch the fun. To encourage people to stay on the fair throughout the day and buy programmes, which help defray the increasing cost of staging the fair, this year there will be an hourly lucky programme draw, with the chance to win £25 in cash – sponsored by CR6 magazine. Fair chairman, Jeremy Pursehouse, said: “We hope families will spend the whole day at the fair, as there is plenty to see and do and lots to eat and drink. We have planned as much fun into the day as we can. The only thing we haven’t planned is the weather, but the fun will continue, no matter what. “The one thing we can never plan for is Tug o’ War teams. To make the tournament a success, we need people to enter. We are looking for teams of eight (adult or children) that would like to enter.” To enter call Jeremy Pursehouse on 01883 623025, or check in at the control caravan as early as possible on the day. As always, the organisers are looking for volunteers to help on the day and before. To volunteer, or for further information, see the web site on www.warlingham-fair.org.uk, call our information line on 07760 926279 or ask to join the Warlingham Fair Facebook group. |
