Dancers get Day 2 of DeFest off to a swinging start. Photograph by Jon Harrison, www.localeventphotos.co.uk The May Bank Holiday weekend saw the launch of this year’s Caterham Festival with a first class line-up of acts performing over the popular two day DeFest music festival. Youngsters flocked to the event held at de Stafford School in Burntwood Lane, Caterham, on Day 1 to hear their favourite local rock bands play while the Swing Jive theme of Day 2 had a more ‘vintage’ atmosphere, with many people dressing up in 1940’s-style outfits for the occasion. As dancers were twirling to the Rock ‘n Roll beat in the school field, children were making sandcastles on the new Festival attraction, the ‘Caterham Beach’ installed round the corner outside the de Stafford Sports Centre. Another new attraction for this year is the Air Show being held on Westway Common on Saturday 7th June, featuring large scale model aeroplanes. This year marks the sixth anniversary of The Caterham Festival which is putting Caterham firmly on the map. Events such as the ‘Waller Pain’ cycle ride up Waller Lane has become a popular event on the cycling calendar with serious cyclists travelling to Caterham from far and wide to take part in the gruelling challenge. The event could not take place without the hard work and enthusiasm of the Caterham Festival volunteers, so look out for them this month in their distinctive, green T-shirts.
