On Sunday 15th June, the Kenley Airfield Heritage Day drew a big crowd of local families who enjoyed the various stalls outside the Portcullis Club, guided tours of the historic airfield and a spectacular display of model aircraft flying. Live swing and jazz music was provided by Silk Road and among many highlights was the ‘1940’s Food’ table. Jane Sidell of English Heritage gave some useful tips and recipes and there were free tastings of a varied range of cakes, biscuits and buns all cooked from genuine war time recipes. Kenley Airfield Friends Group, who ran the event, gathered together a group of wartime veterans and current servicemen and women who meet regularly at the Portcullis/RAFA Club for a photo call. Alan Morgan, Chairman of KAFG said: “The whole event was a great success and a fitting tribute to all who served at Kenley. It also demonstrated the huge local support for our Heritage Lottery Grant application to conserve the airfield and its historic structures. It was great to see the enthusiasm local people have for the airfield and the vital role it played in the defence of our country during the Battle of Britain.” |
