Scouts and Guides from Caterham joined more than than 5,000 Scouts and Guides aged 10-15 from across Surrey and enjoyed an action-packed weekend with more than 200 activities over the weekend of 27th to 29th June at the South of England Showground in Ardingly. From Mud Buggies and car driving to bungee running and scuba diving, the young people were able to try something new, in a safe environment and make new friends at the same time. Jake, a Scout aged 11 from Epsom, said: "It was a great weekend with so many activities to choose from!" Sarah, a Guide aged 13 from Banstead, said: "It was really good to try activities I have not tried before as well as make lots of things in the craft area." The weekend was supported by over 1,500 adult volunteers from across Surrey who carried out a range of roles to make Scoutabout a reality. From camp cooks to a doctor and from fire teams to technical engineers, adult volunteers shared their skills to benefit the young people. Chief Scout Bear Grylls said: "Can you remember the patter of rain on your tent, the sound of owls or the rustling of the wind in the leaves at night? It's a feeling of absolute freedom and belonging – re-establishing our relationship with both ourselves and planet earth. A night in the outdoors is also a reminder that not everything that's precious and valuable costs a lot of money." County Commissioner of Surrey Scouts, Roxanna Bostock, said: "Everyone is having a fab time even despite the weather. It is good to see so many smiles and hear lots of thank yous." Assistant County Commissioner, Surrey West Guides, Sarah Ings, said: “Scoutabout is a wonderful opportunity for Guides and Scouts to have so much freedom in a safe environment. Our dedicated team of volunteers worked tirelessly for the past 18 months to make this the best event so far." |
