Across Caterham and its district, 21 gardeners, allotmenteers, bakers and crafters prepared exhibits for the Caterham & District Horticultural Society summer show. The show took place on Saturday 12th July at Hillcroft School in Chaldon Road, Caterham-on-the-Hill. Society Chairman Debbie Fox noticed a high summer feel to the show. Debbie said: “This year, high summer flowers are blooming at least a month earlier than last year. The pelargoniums were perfect and the hydrangeas heavenly. Even autumn’s dazzling dahlias appeared in the floral classes.” Highlights in the bumper 96 show categories included floral arrangements. A record seven entrants entered an arrangement in a tea pot. Potatoes were perfect, with entrants trying the new blight-tolerant variety Sarpo Mira. Caterham-on-the-Hill Parish Council sponsored the hanging basket class in the show. Chris Botton from the parish council was on hand to present cash prizes to the lucky winners. The Society has introduced the Roy Skelton Cup for the best young local gardener aged 16-21. The cup marks the contribution of the Society's much loved previous chairman of the same name. To win it, the young competitor has to score the highest total points in horticultural classes in the 2014 spring, summer and autumn shows. No-one in this age category entered the spring or summer shows. There is a chance for a newcomer to scoop the prize at the autumn show on Saturday 13th September. For more information and a schedule of categories for the 2014 shows and forms for entry, please see the 'What's on section at http://caterhamdistricthorticulturalsoc.weebly.com.
