One of the oldest Women's Institutes in Surrey, Chaldon WI, held a special Birthday Lunch recently at Chaldon Village Hall to celebrate their 96th birthday. An exhibition of photos and other memorabilia was put on display to mark the occasion, taken from archives covering almost the whole period since the group started. The oldest document on display was the Annual Report from 1923. Another Annual Report from 1943 gave a fascinating insight into what the group was doing during the war and there were also photos of their birthday celebrations in 1948, 1968 and 1988. The Chaldon WI's Archive Group is in the process of copying and digitising the archive material to keep it safe for posterity. The process has been greatly assisted by a grant from Surrey County Council, help from Surrey County Councillor John Orrick and donations from the 2012 and 2013 Chaldon Fete. |
