The allotment site situated between Sunny Rise and Heath Road in Caterham-on-the-Hill has been identified by Tandridge District Council as a potential site for residential redevelopment, being able to accommodate 50 units. Allotment holders and residents of Sunny Rise and Heath Road gathered on the Allotments on Saturday 26th November to find out what they can do to protect this valuable local green space from development. Concerns were raised about the loss of this well used, tranquil area which provides exercise and recreation for almost 200 people, as well as providing food and being a haven for wildlife in the Caterham area. Local residents are particularly concerned that with the loss of this cultivated area, which soaks up excess water, flooding will increase and their homes will be affected. Wider concerns include: • Increased traffic on already congested roads. • Failure of the existing infrastructure to carry the burden, particularly roads and drainage systems. • End to the 'separation of settlements' between Chaldon and Caterham on the Hill. • Children not being able to attend a local school due to over-subscription. The deadline for the consultation process is 30th December 2016 and further information can be found here: http://consult.tandridge.gov.
