Old Caterhamians under 9's rugby team had plenty to celebrate last weekend when they became overall champions at the Surrey Rugby Festival, held at Old Reigations Rugby Club on Sunday 3rd April. The team faced others from across Surrey, proving themselves to be an invincible unit! After drawing their first match at two tries apiece they beat their next five opponents very impressively. The front row, comprising Jasper, Lewis, Antony, Josh and Arlo formed the basis of a solid foundation with Tom as the scrum half. The Cats played the final of the competition against a well-drilled and unbeaten Reeds side. During the first half Reeds were doing all of the attacking, however the Cats' defence stood firm and managed to withstand the Reeds' onslaught. After an inspiring team talk given by team captain Connor, the Old Cats started as if they wanted the job finished in a hurry with Thomas diving into the maul countless times to rip the ball free,. This allowed Kieran and Bertie to find space to burst down the flanks and score in the corners with Rayhan tackling anyone who formed a threat. The Cats then scored three tries in quick succession. After that Reeds had little to offer and a delighted Cats side, having won 15-0, lifted the trophy, which was handed to them by the Surrey organisers. |
