On Saturday 23rd January we had two of the most close fought encounters in the Surrey Cups!
With both teams not having played since the 12th December, could they continue their fine form?
Caterham Old Boys 3 - Oakhall 2.
The Reserves played at home in the Junior County Cup against Oakhall after a swap of venues due to a waterlogged Oakhall pitch. A scrappy first half saw the Old Boys go in at half time 1-0 up from a well taken penalty from Nathan Arney sending the keeper the wrong way. The second half started well and a close range header from Donegan made it 2-0 after good work by Danny Gillam. A penalty and excellent shot from outside the box saw Oakhall back on level terms. With extra time looming and just minutes left, the game was decided with a scorcher of a shot from Nathan Arney. Not our best performance but job done and still unbeaten in all competitions.
Croygas Phoenix 6 - Caterham Old Boys 7
On the same day the First Team were away at Croygas Phoenix in the Intermediate County Cup. The script could not have been written for this one, which turned out to be a thriller.
The first half ended on level pegging 1-1 then in the second half we were 5-2 down and heading out of the cup and our first defeat! An exchange of goals left the game with less than ten minutes remaining at 6-4 to Croygas. Then the game took a bizzare twist. Three players from Croygas were sent off in quick succession for various offences. With two goals still needed, the Old Boys laid siege to the Croygas goal. With just two minutes left on the clock, two amazingly quick goals looked like we had secured a draw to take the game into extra time but with the last kick of the game the Old Boys scored again to win 7-6 and progress to the last 8. How good it is to have football back again!
