Hopes for a swift return back to the Ryman League following last season's relegation were dampened by a miserable start to the season. Leafe failed to register a victory in their opening three league fixtures and suffered a disappointing early exit in the FA Cup tie at Redhill. The re-signing of veteran striker and Leafe legend Paul Scott was the catalyst for a turn in fortunes and much improved performances. Paul scored a hat trick at home to Holmesdale in a 3-1 victory, the first win of the season. This was followed by a 3-2 win away to Woodstock Sports, Jay Garrick scoring a late winner. In an amazing game at Church Road against Greenwich Borough, Leafe laid siege to the visitors' goal, but somehow managed to miss two penalties early in the second half after taking a deserved lead shortly before half time. Leafe were punished with a late Greenwich equaliser. Leafe lost their next home fixture 2-0 to an impressive Cray Valley. In the next game away to early pacesetters Erith & Belvedere, Leafe fought hard to win 2-1 against the odds. However a deflating 3-1 reverse away to Rochester United was followed by a disappointing stalemate at home to Tunbridge Wells, with both sides being reduced to ten men. A rousing cup tie at Church Road in the FA Vase first round against Channel Islanders Guernsey saw a spirited second half comeback, and Leafe almost took the game to extra time after being three goals down at the break, in front of a hearty crowd of almost 250. Leafe lie in 12th place in the table with 12 points from ten games, but the Leafe faithful remain optimistic that a new team can build momentum and get back into contention. |
