For just over two years, runners of all ages and fitness levels have been getting along to Riddlesdown Common on Saturday mornings to take part in the popular 'Riddlesdown 5K parkrun'. There are over 200 parkruns taking place at different venues all over the country every week, all of them starting at 9am on Saturday mornings. The runs are organised by volunteers and take place along the countryside between Riddlesdown and Whyteleafe, starting at Warlingham School and finishing at Riddlesdown School. Many of the runners meet for a post-run coffee at The Horseshoe in Warlingham to swap stories about their run that day. One of the runners, Peter Georgiades, said: "I think it is a terrific service to the community, run by volunteer enthusiasts, who are prepared to give a lot of their free time to serve the community and encourage people to participate in an outdoor activity that is hugely beneficial to their heath and wellbeing. It is also a great way to make new friends and have fun competing against each other." The parkrun is not a race but a timed run so participants can try to improve their personal speed each week.
