The Old Boys reserves completed a league and cup double this month, winning the Junior Cup for the second consecutive year (the only team ever to achieve this!) A fine all round performance saw off a determined 'The Plough' Ifield team 3-0.
The league has been wrapped up with four games to play, having played 16, won 16, scored 74 and conceded a paltry seven! Two promotions and cups in two years is all credit to manager Gary Pryde and his team.
The first team have had a disastrous April losing three games in a row and from being one point off the top now linger nine points behind in sixth position. Manager Andy Reekie has had team selection problems with players unavailable to play. This is becoming a common problem with all teams as some players work at weekends or have other commitments. Gone are the days when our wives and partners went to weddings, Christenings etc and we joined them at the receptions in the evening!
The first team had a very interesting game last month against Fulham Deaf. The Old Boys played extremely well and won 6-2 against a very good Fulham side. It made you realise what a huge disadvantage they have as our players can shout out 'man on', 'keeper' and tell players where to be and who to mark etc. whereby the Fulham side have to be face to face to communicate. All credit to them for playing so well and they are above us in the league.
All said and done, the first team have had a very good season, playing in a higher league against tougher opposition each week, but unfortunately no silverware this season for them. If we win our last few remaining games and other results go our way there is still a faint chance of promotion!
Our annual Vets game took place on Good Friday with past players dusting off their boots for their once a year game. All good fun and enjoyed by everyone. Some say the best part was back in the bar at the Caterham Club afterwards............
