The past month has been a difficult one for Whyteleafe. First up was the loss of club captain Paul Scott who has signed for divisional rivals Dulwich Hamlet. 'Scotty' was a great fans favourite at the Leafe and was in something like his sixth spell with the club, but work commitments meant that a move to Dulwich was a preferred option for him, and he leaves with our best wishes. This left us with a bit of a shortage of strikers, but thankfully Darren Watson who had been performing so well in early season has returned to fill the void.
On the pitch the results have been mainly disappointing, with late goals costing us dear. The most dramatic example of this was in the match against Dulwich, when with the score at 1-1 heading into the last minute of the game, most people expected the point. However things went crazy and Dulwich scored three goals in five minutes to run out 4-1 winners! Leafe were also a goal to the good going into the last ten minutes at Fleet, before conceding twice to lose 2-1 in what was a very scrappy encounter.
In the Surrey Senior Cup we continued this form and conceded in the 93rd minute to lose 3-2 away to Walton and Hersham, who we had drawn with just a week earlier in the league. One bright moment was a 2-1 win away to Corinthian Casuals. Whyteleafe had led for most of the game, but the Casuals equalized with eight minutes to go and there was a dreaded sense of d¨¦j¨¤ vu. Mercifully, Fleming grabbed a winner in the last minute to take the points for Whyteleafe.
With a number of players returning from injury we hope that January will deliver some better fortune.
Happy New Year!
